The Burning Barrel: Summer Newsletter

Autumn Reservations. Our Makers. Prairie Concerts.

Summer Becomes Autumn

As farmers and restaurant owners, we are often 3 steps ahead in our minds and 2 steps behind on the ground. Those precious moments we spend in “present time” are when we get lost, and found, doing what we love. Playing with Opal, butchering, gently placing seeds in the ground and harvesting their fruits, working with our animals, building a fire, and stirring a up a fresh drink.

We are grateful that we get to do it all, and that we get to do it for our family and for our community. Thank you, as always, for your enthusiasm and support as we continue to move forward with this vision!

Come out to the farm this Summer or Autumn and experience Origin: regional food and drink, people and animals, balance on the land.

Heartland Harvest

We celebrated our 1 year anniversary last weekend. We have come so far, and we couldn’t have created the experience you love so much without the good work of our local farming community. Every Saturday, we head to the Lawrence Farmer’s Market and get inspiration for the upcoming week’s menu. If we don’t grow it ourselves, we promise to source it sustainably and as close to home as possible. Each week, we write a new menu and site every farm that contributed to our ingredient list.

Here are a few of our most frequented farm stands:

Organic Fruits and Veggies: Moon on the Meadow and Mellowfields
Peppers and Herbs: LCG Farms
Stone Fruit: Trails West
Apples and Honey: Snow’s Produce
Herbal Teas and Bitters: Tree Line Creations
Greens: Wild Hollow Farm
Asparagus: Pendleton’s
Heirloom Grains: Stone and Sparrow
Dona Fina: Family Farmed Coffee

We encourage you to support your local growers and makers, wherever you are!

By the way, we are looking for the following items: cornmeal, hempseed, rice. Please contact us if you know of a high quality, local source!

Saturday, October 21. “Farmer’s Ball”
The harvest season is coming to a close, and we would like to celebrate the hard work of all of the local farmers that supported our restaurant, and our community.
